A Teacup with Seoul

This next case has everything. It combines the trafficking of sick puppies, high prices, fake names, forged records, and internet sales.

In November 2016, a puppy broker in Northern California was sentenced for felony animal cruelty, operating without a license, and eleven other charges related to the business of selling puppies from South Korea. The sales were conducted around the world, both over the internet and in person. The puppies were underage, assorted breeds, mostly teacups, and all miserably sick. There was a high probability that the required veterinary records were forged. The puppies cost at least $4,000 each.

Numerous other puppies in the broker’s possession were also in poor condition, lacking food, water, and ventilation, and visibly sick. One such puppy, just a couple weeks old, was found near death; she was extremely dehydrated, and her mouth was sealed shut from the dehydration. She did not survive. The broker was already on probation for a prior conviction of running the same kind of operation, but the conviction and fine ordered were just a nuisance to him, as they are to others like him. When these brokers are fined, they don’t change their ways, they just adjust the costs of their dogs to cover the costs of the fines and still make a profit.

This particular broker used multiple business names as well as assorted aliases to evade detection and be able to shutter any business quickly if necessary. This time the broker was sentenced to one year in jail, prohibited from dealing in or possessing dogs for at least ten years, and ordered to pay restitution and other penalties. Upon discharge from jail, the broker will be on felony probation for five years. Kudos to our colleagues up north.
